PRESIDENT SYDNEY BLUES SOCIETY Gary De Wall
Mainline Through the motins cd review
Well here's the debut cd from this hard working NSW band and they are certainly doing more than just going "through the motions".
These guys have what i would describe as the "Aussie blues rock sond", and they do it very well.
Vocalist Joyce Bugeja has a powerful blues rock voice which is equally at home with the big rocky numbers and the quieter bluesy numbers. When i first saw the band i couldn't believe such a big voice came from such a small lady.
Guitarist Troy Camilleri is a fine picker, and plays a few variety of styles throught the album. Groovy rythyms, funky waa waa and picking thats sweat and clean or distorted, screaming or ballsy to suit the various songs. Very nice playing indeed.
The rhythm section consisting of Greg Healy (drums) and Guy Chizzonite (bass) lay down a solid and entertaining base for Troy and Joyce without being to load or overbearing. For most part they seem happy to sit back in the mix a bit and support the songs.
The whole shooting match was supported nicely by Jeff Cripps at A#studios. Greg told me the guys were very proud of there cd and should be.
The 14 tracks were all written by band members(5 Greg,4 Joyce,4 Troy,1 Guy) and they are a good bunch of songs. The band really rocks out on numbers like the big powerhouse boogie Downhearted, the up tempo texas shuffle Last a long time, and the Chuck Berry like rocker Through The Motions, but i reckon Joyces voice and Troys guitar are really showcased by the slower nubers like the slow texas shuffle Sad n Blue (with joyce in Bonnie Raitt mode), and the big slow blues of Bad Feelin Blues.
So if you like your blues cd with a heavy dose of blues rock you'll like this cd. You can pick them up at gigs or contact band online.
